Google Chat seems like it could be simpler, but it’s being shoved into other apps too. Google Talk was not Google Voice, by the way. Apps & Updates Google was originally supposed to start the migration away from classic Hangouts to Chat in October 2019 for Workspace (previously G Suite) users. Yet it was never as simple as Google Talk - also at times known as “Gchat” - even though it probably should have been. Maybe that reason is because then it became a chat app. That sounds like a certain $150B public company, but wasn’t for some reason. So I think Hangouts is going away, even though it started life as a super simple mulit-user video chat product. Nor Duo, which I believe does still exist. Nor Allo, which I think also no longer exists. Instead, you’ll want the Voice app or the Messages app. You used to be able to use Hangouts with Google Fi and Google Voice, but soon you won’t be able to. Meet is like Chat for Enterprise with a focus on Rooms, I think. After years of talking about the end times, Google made it official today: Hangouts will be turned off and unavailable for Google Workspace customers next month. It’s also a part of Gmail which includes Chat, I think. I think that’s gone in favor of Hangouts which is now gone in favor of Chat. As for “Hangouts Chat”, which was a thing, I have no idea. ![]() I think they’re effectively ending the Hangouts brand in favor of Chat. I’ve read this post five times and I’m still so confused. I mean… what? I am a user of all these products and I am so confused. With Chat, you can more easily plan with others on goals and similar interests, share and collaborate on files, and assign tasks to help keep everyone on the same page. Chat includes familiar Hangouts features like direct and group messaging, with helpful additions like send to inbox, faster search, emoji reactions and suggested replies. GOOGLE HANGOUTS ENDING FREEIt’s possible that after all of the changes Hangouts is undergoing, you may just want to use a completely different service altogether for your messaging and calling needs.Next year, Chat will become available as a free service - both in the integrated experience in Gmail and the Chat standalone app. Alternative messaging and calling services If you’d rather just go ahead and start using Google Chat instead, you can use it via the web or its mobile apps ( iOS or Android). According to 9to5Google, Google has already begun rolling out a preview version of Google Chat, a messaging app that appears to be a replacement for Hangouts messaging. Google will automatically migrate existing conversations from Hangouts to Chat, which is available in Gmail and as a standalone app. Starting in March of 2021, Fi users will no longer be able to use the Hangouts app to send or receive text messages or make or receive voice calls and voicemail. While you may still be able to send chat messages to other Google accounts via Hangouts - we tested this in April 2021, and for now, chatting with other Google accounts appears to still work in Hangouts - text messaging from Hangouts is a different story, and like voice calling, you’ll now need Google Voice to send a text message.Įventually, however, Hangout’s remaining chat messaging functionality may also be on the chopping block in the future. In an email received by one G Suite customer, Google confirmed that SMS support in Hangouts will cease to exist starting in May. When you set up your new Voice account (or choose to use an existing one), you should bear in mind the following: Past messages from Hangouts should still appear in Voice, and you should be able to use your Voice number for voicemails, texts, and calls (including domestic and international calls made either via your mobile device or web browser). GOOGLE HANGOUTS ENDING HOW TOIf you’ve never used a Google Voice account before, check out our guide on how to set up a Voice account on your smartphone. Google is going to kill off Hangouts in late 2021, but if you opt-out (for now) of this Chat preferred option, you can still have Hangouts in the places you are used to. At this time, you’ll need to set up and use a Google Voice account to make phone calls. Google recently shut down the Google Voice integration that made voice calling in Hangouts possible, which means you can’t place phone calls from Hangouts anymore.
